How To Avoid Junk Food At The Grocery

By October 14, 2021 December 29th, 2021 No Comments

1. Shop on a full stomach

Shopping while hungry results in us going overboard with purchases. Your brain is actively telling your body it is hungry and seeking out quick sources of energy (that is, sugary, processed carbohydrate treats), making it harder to make healthy choices.

2. Have a plan

Go in with a list of what you need and what you intend on buying. Take an extra 5 minutes before you go to the grocery to write down everything you need, including ingredients, proteins, vegetables, snacks, and drinks.

3. Shop while in a calm mood

Shopping directly after a long, stressful day at work, and you’re feeling tired or overwhelmed,  your food choices may reflect your mood.

4. Shop once a week

Do a big grocery shop once and get everything you need for the week. If you have to make a quick stop into the store to pick up a small item, you will likely come out with more than one thing. It’s easier to turn down the junk food once a week as opposed to 3 times a week.

5. Shop around the outside of the supermarket

Junk food, like chocolates and chips, are all located in the middle of the aisles, so if you can, stick to the perimeter of the store where the fresh food is kept. Walking aimlessly up and down the aisles is when you can get distracted and stuff your cart with the junk foods.
